I know. They go fast sometimes. Been sitting here for 6 hours now. Don't dare leave or I'll miss the last one.
Saw the first 4, not missing #5! LOL

TerriFla's picture

Mom and Dad just came by with MORE food. and man! is that AC loud.

cb0324's picture

kestrel fledgling in the tree near the box, calling loudly Apparently needs some more flight lessons, LOL.

TerriFla's picture

OMG the chick will be too fat to go out the hole if they don't stop shoving mice in there! LOL

Shauna's picture

Maybe she's making up for lost time or something. I wonder, are the parents also still supplying food to the fledglings, as well as to this chick? They seem to be concentrating on her, but without visual I just don't know.

cb0324's picture

mom kestrel just delivered another mouse- the remaining chick will need a refrigerator soon, lol.

Minot's picture

Boy, at the rate the parents are feeding the unfledged chick, she's going to be to fat to fly.

Meanwhile, at least one of the nearby fledglings is protesting loudly whenever the parents drop dinner in the box.

TerriFla's picture

Mama came by for a visit!

cb0324's picture

Another rodent from dad! With all that food and all the space in the house, who would want to fledge, lol.

TerriFla's picture

OMG more food.

nc's picture

I just saw one of the female chicks that fledged try to snatch food (looked like a moth) from unfledged female chick. Didn't work, so she left while protesting.

I figured the two remaining male chicks would fledge today, leaving only the two female chicks to fledge on Sunday. My prediction was wrong. It seems that the females usually fledge later than the males even when they hatch earlier. Could this be due to the size difference between the male and female kestrels?

TerriFla's picture

I think there are 2 uneaten mice in there now.

TerriFla's picture

Daddy just flew over for a visit.

TerriFla's picture

ANother mouse!!

TerriFla's picture

ANd another one from dad.

Shauna's picture

Male adult was doing this fun little stuffing act with the female chick, who seemed to eat little bits offered but apparently wasn't hungry enough to eat the entire rodent, and boy did that male do his best to try and get it into her. So finally he left the box with the critter and immediately the cries of other fledglings (I assume) could be heard. Did anyone else see this?

Jill from MN's picture

Yes, indeed! He wants to teach the little one why it's important to fledge.

Jill from MN's picture

She's pacing on the ledge....

Jill from MN's picture

She preens her flight feathers a lot, too. Right now she's flapping her wings like crazy as her siblings killy outside.

marcia's picture

Yes, I saw that whole thing too. I just wondered if little one is very good at tearing off bits to eat. But at least we know she was fed well today, in preparation for her big day tomorrow. I was hoping at least one of the others would keep her company tonight, but not so far.

cb0324's picture

In my report I confused thee male fledgling with dfad kestrel. Huh.
But she is seriously clapping her wings, obviously making herself ready to go. I really think that she is the one born later.

cb0324's picture

Wow, Mom kestrel took the mouse out of the boX! I think she realized that the remaining nestling already got enough.

Jill from MN's picture

I just saw Mama do the same as Papa and take a mouse out of the box after eating and feeding the little female

Jill from MN's picture

Will the outside camera be turned onto where the fledglings are after the littlest one fledges?

cb0324's picture

I think so. They always do that. It's fun to watch them excising around the box and chirping the first few weeks.

TerriFla's picture

Well probably tomorrow we will have an empty nest.

TerriFla's picture

the female brought in a mouse then flew back out with it.
Tempting the chick to come out.

TerriFla's picture

SHe just hacked up a black pellet!

TerriFla's picture

She went!!!!! YAY!!!!

TerriFla's picture

EMPTY NEST!!!!!!

Jill from MN's picture

No, I saw her mama go in and out of the nest. I wish that other cam would get fixed!

Jill from MN's picture

Sorry, you were right - I missed the little gal by just a few minutes.

Congratulations to all the Kestrel Kids!!!!!

Jill from MN's picture

I still wish the inside cam were fixed.

TerriFla's picture

Pretty sure I saw the chick. she was very hesitant to go, but finally went.

Delorahilleary's picture

Sorry guys, I was asleep while the stream went down! I'm fixing it now, and I'm grabbing archive video as well!

Jill from MN's picture

Hi, Delora - no worries! You and the whole American Kestrel Partnership can only be congratulated on another successful nest-to-fledge epic. Thank you so much - and I'm sure that the little kindergarteners will be as delighted as me with the footage as well as with any sight of fledgling play.

Shauna's picture

I agree with fellow commentators that your work has been sterling. I'll be keeping my eye out for the archive video. I loved your photos on FB which really give a nice feel for the surroundings. Someday I hope to get there for a visit.

Delorahilleary's picture

Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you guys enjoyed watching! :)

cb0324's picture

Hi, could someone move the outside came in such a way that it shows the surroundings?

Jill from MN's picture

That idea would be ACE! I think it would be great to see the parents teach the fledglings.

Jill from MN's picture

BTW - I have another very scientific idea. It's a bit gross, but could samples be analyzed of what the nestlings could not digest to see if there was any chemical residue? It's way better than the scientific paper I read....

TerriFla's picture

I know it's a holiday weekend, but could you please move the camera so we can see the outside?
Thanks

TerriFla's picture

Man it's windy out there!

TerriFla's picture

Thanks for the expanded view!!

TerriFla's picture

Nobody's home.

TerriFla's picture

I saw one on the edge of the building!
(that's not a choice on the report so I said on the top of the box.)

TerriFla's picture

Nobody came home?

cb0324's picture

There were a few visits of fledglings to the box, most of them by the freshly fledged female and also one male. But unlike in some previous years, they seem not to come back for the night. Also, somewhat surprisingly, unlike in all previous years when they stayed around the box for many days, they moved away rather quickly.

cb0324's picture

Oh, finally, kestrel chirping again.LOL.

cb0324's picture

Fledgling on the roof calling.
