Yay! someone cleaned the camera! Thanks!

Delorahilleary's picture

Yup! I ran up there quick and wiped the camera with a damp cloth with water. It took me only a few seconds to do, to keep stress to a minimum.

The female was not happy to see me, so I skedaddled quick! Looks like everything is back to normal again :)

TerriFla's picture

for now! thanks again.

The chicks started moving around the box.

Delorahilleary's picture

It won't be long before they are up and walking!

cb0324's picture

The chicks tried to pull on the rodent but they still need the mom to cut it up. The first day they are not any more on one pile, rather start spreading over the box.

cb0324's picture

Tonight the chicks stay together but mom kestrel sleeps in a separate corner and is not brooding them any more.

cb0324's picture

One chick is trying to carry around eat a piece of rodent on his own.

My class of 5 year olds really enjoyed the webcam today. They were surprised how much they had grown in a week!

About every 10 to 25 seconds the camera freezes. Is anyone else experiencing that? Also, last night I checked in before bed (I'm in NY) and the cam clock should show a 2-hour difference but it was off by about 4 hours. First time I've noticed that. Thanks for checking...don't know if there's anything you can do.

Delorahilleary's picture

Hello!

When I notice a big time lag like that, I can reset the stream to fix it. I forgot to check the timestamps before I went to bed - my bad!

As for the freezing however, I'm not getting any issues on my computer at the moment. Perhaps try resetting your wi-fi, or hitting ctrl+f5 on your keyboard (which is a hard refresh for the webpage). Nestcam streams can be pretty network intensive, so it's good to check! Let me know if that helps.

cb0324's picture

Now there is poop on cam lens ! Wonder whether the kestrels are going to clean it up , LOL

Delorahilleary's picture

No kidding, right? When are those little brats going to learn some basic housekeeping? Hahaha ;)

Diane's picture

Thanks, I will try the refresh next time.

cb0324's picture

I am getting increasing problems myself. Refreshing will not help. I have no wifi, rather directly to the router by cable. 15 down/2 up, 18 ms ping. Definitely not on my side. No problem with other bird cams.

TerriFla's picture

yes I am having that here also picture refreshing? Not a steady stream. I thought it was because of the 2 cameras running on the one laptop?

cb0324's picture

It freezes often on me as well, just not every 20 seconds

TerriFla's picture

Ahh look! They are looking out the window! Our babies are growing up so fast!

TerriFla's picture

oh shoot. Poop on the camera again!

Delorahilleary's picture

I'm seeing 3 males, 2 females potentially so far. What do you guys think? :)

Delorahilleary's picture

Watching more, I'm starting to doubt my ID of the fuzziest one being female. Hmm! I need a better look!

cb0324's picture

I only dare to ID one female at this point of time.

Jill from MN's picture

12:49 Boise time. The chicks are chowing down on something all by themselves . I just wish the am wasn't so blurry

Delorahilleary's picture

Youtube likes to default to the lowest quality stream. To raise the quality, click on the little gear icon on the bottom right, and select which level you would prefer :) Just note that streaming in HD requires a bit more network capability.

cb0324's picture

Whoever has a regular DSL should not even try HD streaming.

TerriFla's picture

ok. who keeps pooping on the camera!

Griffinsong's picture

This year's clutch is cheeky for sure XD.

cb0324's picture

The poop moved on the camera or somebody cleaned it and it was pooped again.

Diane's picture

Hi again... I tried the hard refresh as well as trying all the settings for pic quality and no luck...stream still freezing every few seconds. This, by the way, is a new phenomenon the last couple of days. I've watched for 2 years and it was always a solid, high quality stream.

cb0324's picture

agreed. See my reply above.

Delorahilleary's picture

I'm honestly a bit baffled myself - I have not changed any settings and the stream is smooth from my home computer. I'm poking our network guy, maybe he'll have more luck than me figuring out what's up! Thanks for your patience guys <3

TerriFla's picture

It seems much better for me today, no buffering.

cb0324's picture

They really zeroed in on the cam lens. Now second poop on the lens. They never did it likie this in the previous years.

cb0324's picture

Wow. The kestrels cleaned the camera lens! LOL

Delorahilleary's picture

Yeah, I went up and told them I'm not their mother, and it was time to pull their own weight! ;)

Jill from MN's picture

Say what one will about the 'tweet' on the lens, these chicks are certainly robust and hardly little birds.

Jill from MN's picture

Any hypothesis as to why this 'rocket poop' happens so much this year? I shouldn't think that the nest box design being new makes a difference.....

TerriFla's picture

Yay no more poop for now!

TerriFla's picture

LOL 2 of them just pooped and I was like no! not on the camera! Both missed. Thank goodness.

Delorahilleary's picture

Indeed, I drove up to do another wipe down! We put the camera in the roof of the box exactly to avoid the poop-blockage, and we're as surprised as you guys that it's suddenly an issue this year when it wasn't before! These guys seem to be extra-rockety butts.

We have ideas for poop shields for implementation next year, but we don't want to do any construction while there are chicks in the nest. In the meantime, I'll keep it clean as best as I can, and I hope the chicks stop rocket-pooping upwards as they get more steady on their feet!

cb0324's picture

It might be just one single chick doing this. ( pooping mutation, lol)

cb0324's picture

Actually, its probably more than one chick doing this. it;s full of poop again.

Delorahilleary's picture

Yup, oh no. I'll have to make another cleaning trip tomorrow.

TerriFla's picture

oh crap!!! lol
on the camera.

TerriFla's picture

I guess it's not funny if you are the one who has to keep going on the roof to clean the poop. You are my hero!

Cynxing's picture

Is it possible they are aware that we are spying on them and this is passive resistance in order to protect privacy?

TerriFla's picture

well that one does keep looking up at the camera.

Delorahilleary's picture

Now I'm seeing if the rain clears up enough to head up for a cleaning trip. I'm not sure I want to be on the roof in a thunderstorm...

TerriFla's picture

Take the WD40 with you and spray the fan in the AC.
