Hi, just for info, I watch from France and there is the same situation of 2 different times on each cam. I'm 2 hours ahead on the inside box. However it seems unpredictable--it can flip back to synchronisation with no warning. Not a huge bother at this point, but once the eggs hatch and there's a lot of movement with feeding, or when the nestlings get to poking their heads out of the box hole, it would be nice to have some reliable synchronisation. What exactly do you mean by "refreshing the cam"? Thanks!

Delorahilleary's picture

Hi Shauna!

Thanks for describing the issue in more detail. We'll take a look - it seems to be on Youtube's end, so we'll see if we can get any assistance there.

What I mean by "refresh the cams" is refreshing the page. If a regular refresh doesn't work, try ctrl+f5 - that's a hard refresh that forces your browser to re-download all data, instead of using a cached version. We'll see if we can find out what's up with Youtube's European connection in the meantime!

Thanks for keeping us posted!

Such a beautiful little male. It is very windy in the box and his surface wing coverts are being blown around as he looks up at the camera and tosses his head back and forth.

Jill from MN's picture

How chilly is it outside? In Minnesota we have had so many cold days...

Delorahilleary's picture

Hi Jill!

We had some really warm 80F days, but with this storm front that rolled in this last week, it got chilly again!

The sun feels warm, but the wind is a crisp 50F right now, which is quite chilly-feeling to our human staff walking about.

It seems our forecast is predicting some warmer weather in the days leading up to potential hatching!

Minot's picture

It may be windy and chilly, but it certainly looks like a beautiful day. I'm loving the cloud shadows.

Delorahilleary's picture

Now we're experiencing a dramatic upswing in temperatures. We went from 50F to 75F yesterday....and now today and tomorrow can hit 85F!

Looks like the little male is panting today. Good thing feathers are one nature's best insulators - both for heat and for keeping cool! You can see the male's little pink tongue here.

TerriFla's picture

Yikes! Bad looking weather. Poor daddy outside. Pretty windy inside too.

Shauna's picture

Yes, stormy looking and feathers blowing all over the place. Wondering if it's cooler now, and wondering if this may have an effect on the hatching dates?

Delorahilleary's picture

Yup, it's about 47F at the moment, and it will remain overcast all day. However, as birds are excellent incubators, it is unlikely that cool weather will effect the eggs at all.

How long will the female stay in there without eating, if the male doesn't come back today?

Delorahilleary's picture

It takes longer than a day for kestrels to starve, so if the male failed to return, it would be quite a while before the eggs are abandoned. However, the male is out and about and hunting, and many food exchanges happened yesterday. A little rain and wind never hurts a raptor!

TerriFla's picture

I know. But I am attached to these guys. :)

TerriFla's picture

Yay! The male came back! Now I get to worry about the female out there in the wind. :)

TerriFla's picture

Would this likely be the same pair from last year?

Delorahilleary's picture

It's actually unlikely. Neither parent is banded this year, and this male is much paler and has very light black markings, unlike last year's male who was very heavily black-marked. It's not uncommon for kestrel pairs to switch up mates and nest sites from year to year.

TerriFla's picture

The inside camera seems to be in Black and White today?

TerriFla's picture

fixed!

Delorahilleary's picture

The cam is in black-and-white when it's the infrared cam, which activates automatically when it's too dark for the regular cam. So, it is black-and-white every night or if it's super stormy. Infrared can allow watching in total darkness, but it doesn't display color.

Is there any way to put the newest posts on the top of the list instead of having to scroll down and change pages? Thanks.

Shauna's picture

If possible, I second the motion

Delorahilleary's picture

I made a link in the very first post of this thread that shows this thread with newest posts first! Click that to get there, or let me know if you are having trouble finding it.

TerriFla's picture

Oh! Wow thank you that is very nice of you.

Shauna's picture

Very sorry! I overlooked it and just found it...very convenient, thanks!

TerriFla's picture

I wish someone would WD40 that AC fan. It scares me to death every time it goes off! Sounds like a Hawk attack or something! LOL

Jill from MN's picture

Oh, yes - I just heard that fan and I quite agree that some WD40 would help a lot. Wouldn't want the little kestrels to become desensitized to possible danger!

Stuck post! My apologies!

TerriFla's picture

Wow! Another really windy day!

TerriFla's picture

Hi it's me the worrier.
:)
The female has been gone over 5 hours.
:(

Delorahilleary's picture

She returned :)

TerriFla's picture

Thank goodness! I couldn't see this morning because the camera is out.

Delorahilleary's picture

Woops, our streaming software decided it wanted to update while I was asleep. The inside cam is back online now! :)

Jill from MN's picture

Our intrepid male has been very restless over the past several minutes as he sits on the eggs. Now about quarter to two Boise time.

Jill from MN's picture

time will tell. Also I love how close the camera is

I have been hearing some soft peeps coming from the eggs for some hours now as the male is restlessly incubating. Seems like soon :3.

Griffinsong's picture

Mom is chomping on half an eggshell, looks like one hatched!
Not seeing the chick yet though.

TerriFla's picture

The male keeps coming back to check on her! That's so sweet.

nc's picture

Good morning. One of the eggs hatched. Earlier, I heard chirps. A few minutes ago, I saw the mother kestrel pull half the eggshell out and eat its lining (I think that is what she was doing).

nc's picture

Ma kestrel just got up to chase off intruder on top of roof. One egg hatched and one is in the process of hatching. I thought I heard what sounded like two chicks. Wish there was a way to post my screen capture of the damp kestrel chick.

Remembered how to embed images. Scroll down to see image.

The inside camera will be going offline briefly while we reconfigure it to get a closer look at the hatching process.

Great shots, NC!

Shauna's picture

Soooooo cooool, wow are they going to be busy now. 3 have hatched and are actively "begging", 2 to go. Can't make out what is being given.

Delorahilleary's picture

One egg hatched, two more eggs are pipped. What a busy morning :)

Minot's picture

I got a good look at the eggs and 1 hatched chick just now while the female was feeding the chick. One of the remaining four eggs was pipped, and I could see motion within the egg.

TerriFla's picture

So. I closed the laptop at 11:30 eastern time to dismiss my class. What time did the first one hatch? 11:30 eastern time. I do not believe it!
