General Discussion : Box design to check on eggs

Hi, what have people found to be effective means of getting the box down from a pole without disturbing the eggs or chicks too much and without requiring a lot of effort?  I'm starting a high school biology group on this effort and we need a relatively easy way to check the boxes.  I'm thinking of sort of a dumbwaiter type design where the box is on a rope that feeds through a hole in the post above the box, down the back of the post, and is tied off and accessible from the ground.  I've attached a drawing to try and describe this.

Anyone ever tried this system or have better ideas?

Thanks!

John

Hello John!

There is a couple options to make for easy monitoring. Here is a member who made telescoping nest poles: http://hub.peregrinefund.org/node/233

A perhaps even easier method is using a pole-mounted camera, or even a selfie stick! Here is someone who made a pole-mounted camera - http://hub.peregrinefund.org/node/253 Just record while you're poking a camera or phone in with a pole, and there is no need to even get off the ground or disturb the nest boxes too much.

Let me know if you have questions :)

Thanks for the info, we'll give it a try!

I use a GoPro Session Hero 4 camera attached to a painters pole. The camera sends a Wi-Fi signal to any smart phone and you can view what the camera is seeing live and take photos and videos using your phone as the controller.
There was also someone on here that posted his design for a hinge pole mount. I'm working on using this so i can bring the box down to band the kestrels and remove starling nests but will use the camera to check the box any other time. I couldn't find the plans on here but i can email them to you if you'd like.
