General Discussion : When do Kestrels begin nesting in Montana?

I am wondering when to expect Kestrels to begin nesting in SW Montana. I assume it will be later than in the Boise area. Our Sacajawea Audubon Society chapter has many boxes out and folks are wondering when to expect egg laying to occur so that they can time their nest observations. Thanks for any information you can provide!

Hello Paulette,

My guess would be mid or late April, depending on your elevation.  A good way to start thinking about observations is when the last danger of frost passes - much like when you would plant flowers.

As for this year, some folks here in Idaho and Colorado are reporting a bit of an early nesting season, due to a warm spring.

Thanks for the advice Delora.  We will start watching for nesting activity in the end of April.  Ours is a very variable spring with usually several frosts and even a snow storm expected even into May.  We usually can't put out tomatoes and tender flowers here at 5,000 feet until very late May.  We will learn more about kestrel activity in our area as we get some success in our boxes.
