Once we put our nest box up, we had interest shown within days. Northern Flickers, Starlings, and the American Kestrels showed interest and not infrequently, the Kestrels would escort others away from the box they seemed to be claiming.
I'm curious if anyone has any idea what that the leg Ma Kestrel has could be from.

That leg almost looks like an owl leg. I shall have to ask around!

I went into my bird book and asked around the office - our best guess is a beat-up juvenile starling. The leg is bent, and it looks like the feathers go down to just the ankle (or the "backward knee")

Interesting. I know there are starlings around the neighborhood, and even some of the adults, in the early spring have visited - and even checked out the nest box. Given they are not native, reducing their numbers "naturally" can't be a bad thing.
