General Discussion : First year box - and we have chicks!

Just a note to say, using a small mirror I noted we had chicks today. Hoping to get a better look and count later, but we did have five eggs, as of 5-16-14. Pretty cool to see this much activity the first year of mounting the box in our backyard.

Update, 6-1-2014: We definitely have five chicks in our box. I got a much larger mirror and was able to get a good look when Ma kestrel was away this morning. I know they are getting variety in their diet, too, as I saw a snake go in the box today. I had seen Pa kestrel with the snake a ways away, then a few minutes later a flash of a bird and I have a shot of the south end of a parent bird, with the snake trailing out of the nest box hole. Will try to add some pics later today, in the gallery area.

As a sidebar - things should be more peaceful for our kestrel family, as there was a robin family in a tree about thirty feet away from the kestrel box. The robins had four chicks in their nest, but as of today, they have fledged. The parents of both families have been working to keep the others honest and giving each other grief anytime they were around. We are used to seeing the fledged robins spend time around the yard after fledging, but I don't think we'll see that this year.
