General Discussion : Curious activity

Just checked on our active nest. Both adults were inside the box when I climbed up. Female flew out, male stayed inside while I looked. Saw 3 chicks. There were 5 eggs, maybe someone was under the male? Curious thing though, there are no shavings left in the box. There were plenty last week when I looked. Wondering if I should try to replace them or just leave things alone. Any suggestions?

It could very well be!  Very young nestlings fit very easily under the adults.

It could also be that a couple of the eggs turned out to be infertile, and were eaten or removed.  You will certainly know for sure when you check again! Young kestrels grow to adult size very quickly.
