Adding nest cam in the box

Hi everyone! We used a pole cam in our nest box and found  4 eggs. We'd like to install a nest cam in the box.  Would this be too invasive at this point and possibly cause the kestrels to abandon the nest? TIA

Hi,

We have been studying Kestrels for 10 years now and have been providing some data and feather samples for the American Kestrel Partnership.

Our experiences have shown us this may NOT be the time to disturb the nest box.

Wait until next year and we are sure the Kestrels will be back if they have had a good brood and fledged.

You also may have to modify the nest box to accommodate a camera depending on the focal length and lens size.

If you go to KESTREL KORNER there will be information on the cameras we use for our HD LIVE STREAM

Hi! Thanks for your reply.  It was how we felt too. We have an Arlo cam so we see their activities outside.  We'll put one in next year.

Nu-Sun pretty much covered it, but we'll chime in here too - it's unfortunately too late to add a camera now that the box is occupied. Even if it could be installed very quickly with minimal disturbance on your part (and as Nu-Sun said, this likely isn't feasible), any addition or modification of the nestbox would be a disturbance in itself.

Welcome to the American Kestrel Partnership! We're looking forward to seeing your data, and we hope you have kestrels for years to come.

Hi Matthew! Thanks so much for the warm welcome! We are hopeful that our kestrels would be successful in building a family here.  We sure wished that we had the foresight and installed the camera from the get go. There's always next year. We registered our box already and will input data.

Best regards,

Tim & Shiela
