My wife doesn't like to see her acrophobic septuagenarian husband on a ladder struggling to attach a kestrel nest box to a utility pole, and I don't like it, either. So, we have come up with a method that at least eliminates the need to fasten screws at the top of the box, which is the most awkward part of the process. First, I attach a "backboard," the same size as the back of the box, to the pole with screws, which is not all that difficult. Then, I lift the box, to which I have attached two hooks at the top of the back, and hook the box over the backboard. Then, I secure the bottom of the box to the backboard with a couple of screws. The hooks that I use (from Ace Hardware) create a gap of about a quarter-inch between the box and the backboard. To keep that gap from closing at the bottom of the box, I attach a couple of 0.25-inch thick, 1.25-inch-wide strips to the backboard. Home Depot calls these "Fill-it Strips," and they cost $0.96 for an 8-foot strip. Removal of the box is simple: just remove the screws at the bottom of the box, and lift the box off of the backboard. I have created a photo gallery to show this method at https://picasaweb.google.com/117382804894090345538/KestrelNestBoxMountin...
