General Discussion : eating chunk of birdbox?

My apologies I am new to this group-I couldn't figure out how to post a report.  I saw the male chick take a chunk out of the lower cavity of the box and held it in his beak for awhile.  I hope he didn't eat it and if so, it doesn't hurt him!

The bottom of the kestrel box is lined with a mix of gravel and wood chips, and as the kestrels grow up a layer of cast pellets gets added on top!  Young kestrels frequently chew on, grab, or nibble the bedding, and it does not seem to hurt them.
