Changing box location

My project has 26 numbered boxes.  When we move one, is it best to just change the location and leave the name/number the same?   Or should I delete the box then add it back with new location and old number?   I need to keep the original numbers somehow because they are prominently stencilled on the bottom of the box.

Hi Bill -

Our team is actually in discussions right now about how to handle cases such as these. We should be able to provide you an answer later this week. Thank you!

Hi Bill -

If you do the first thing you mentioned (changing the coordinates of the existing nest box record), behind the scenes our database actually does the second (removes the original nest box record from your account and creates a copy at the new coordinates). So on your end, these two solutions would like identical. Simply changing the coordinates of your existing nest box(es) would probably be the easiest for you.

That said, the issue this has caused in the past for other partners is that while the observation data from prior years remains in our database, it is no longer accessible to the partner. If you don't need all of your observation data to be visible on the AKP site, then by all means change the coordinates via the method you described. If you DO want all of your observation data to be visible on the AKP site, including data from boxes that have since been relocated, then you would need to "clone" the box, change the coordinates of the new record, and change the name of the old record (e.g., from C-10 to C-10 [relocated]) to avoid confusion during data entry.

We hope that makes sense. If you have any questions about how to do any of the above, please let us know. Thank you for your participation in the American Kestrel Partnership.
