I'm monitoring two nest boxes in a state park, where I work, but I see from photos here that some boxes are located in suburban areas. I have not considered putting a box on my house because I assumed kestrels would not use a box in this area or that it would be too far from prey since open fields are not nearby (half a mile). Should I put a box up under these conditions?
Thank you,
Kim

Hello!I would say, go ahead
Hello!
I would say, go ahead and give it a try, with the caveat of monitoring it closely. If there is the open space and food resources for a kestrel, they will come - but if it repeatedly becomes a nest box for starlings or other invasives, then the nest box could be removed again.
