We have been studying these pint size raptors for about 7+ years & have witnessed many exciting moments. Our small Wildlife & Nature filming company is all about sharing our our experiences with others. We hope you do not take offense of our posts. Thank you for letting us share with the partnership & members. Sincerely Nu-Sun Cinema. Winnipeg, Mantoba, Canada.

We are thrilled that you share your findings and your videos here! This is why we created the discussion board in the first place --- so every kestrel enthusiast can have a common meeting place! We are currently working on a feature that will allow you to post all of your nest updates onto one thread so that visitors can track the progress of your recorded nests and see your photos in one place, so be on the lookout for that technology to be implemented. I hope this will help you and visitors enjoy the Winnipeg kestrels more thoroughly! Cheers for kestrel conservation!

Greetings! I really enjoyed watching your video. I am new to the Partnership and plan on setting up my first nest boxes for the Spring of 2017. I would like to set up a video feed like you have. Can you make a suggestion as to what I should purchase? And perhaps where I could get the equipment online? Thanks so much!

Hi,

I just wanted to pass on our experience with the nest cams.

Make/Model: VIVOTEK FD8151V

http://www.vivotek.com/fd8151v/#views:view=jplist-grid-view

It's a 1.3MP Power over Ethernet (PoE) camera. It's a very small camera. It has a wide viewing angle so you don't have to install too far above the entrance hole (keeps you box a little bit smaller height wise). It also comes with some great software so you can set it up to record any motion to your hard drive. We have purchased this camera from. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/

From the 2 camera's I'm running a 280' each, Cat6+ outdoor cable connected to a TP-LINK 8-port PoE switch which has 2 PoE ports and 6 standard Gigabit ports.

The camera is a wired IP camera. We feel that wired is a much safer guarantied connection.

For an internet connection we are using a separate connection for the stream only @10mbs (mega bits per sec.) upload speed. Provided by our local cable company.

The live stream for our web site is provided by https://www.angelcam.com/

Our computer which was built for the stream only.

AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz Quad-Core CPU/Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 mATX MB/4GB DDR3 1600 ADATA XPG V1 Memory/500GB WD Blue SATA HDD/DVD-ROM/CPU Cooler/Cougar Spike Case w/500W PSU PC .

Here is the link to the nest box plans.

NOTE: We have added about 7-8 inches to the height of the nest box for the type of cameras we are using. KEEPING the 3 inch hole the same distance from the bottom of box, which is 12 inches to the bottom of the hole.

We have learned to keep you stream system separate from all other computers and internet connections for a worry free environment. This does not say you will not have any problems.
