General Discussion : Too late to nest?

I installed a Kestrel box in our back yard about 3 weeks ago.  We had a Male Kestrel visit it the first day.  We've had on and off visits until last Monday, 27 Mar 2016.  That day I put a camera in the bo and actally captured footage of a Male Kestel inside the nest.  The bad news is we haven't seen any Kestrels since.  Is it too late in the season for my nest?  Have all the breeding pairs already found nests?

Thanks

Bruce

Hi Bruce!

It is certainly not too late to nest - while many kestrels in some areas are laying eggs now, much of the time egg-laying doesn't happen until late April or even later. So, it's not too late yet!

The presence of a male kestrel is a good thing - male kestrels arrive first at nesting sites, and then they use their bright plumage, prey gifts, and flashy flying to attract a female to the nest site. This process could take a while.
