General Discussion : Kestrel boxes

Two kestrel boxes hung in Fall 2015, now being populated by starlings.  I will relocate one of the boxes to proper further distance, and clean both boxes of starling nest material.  I have two kestrel homes on the apex of the north and southwest sides of our home where the roof meets the house.  Trying to encourage more kestrels by providing the boxes, but see now it is a battle with the starlings.  The male kestrel is squawking at and swooping at the starlings all the time! Wish us luck!

I hope it goes well! Definitely let us know via observations if the kestrels win out in the end or not!

Hello!

If you continue having trouble with starlings, try relocating the kestrel nest box to a South or Southeast-facing direction. Starlings prefer North orientations, while Southeast is the most favored by kestrels.

Let us know how it goes!

Looks as though the kestrel has prevailed, at least in chasing the starlings out of boxes....for now. We witnessed an aggressive persistent attack following the original posting on this forum, and seems the kestrel has remained at large, from its home in the apex of our south roof, keeping a healthy eye on boxes to ensure the starlings are not using them. I wonder if the kestrel might have interest now?

Success! Just witnessed one kestrel coming out of the box that is lookers left in picture. I will investigate box late next week to see what I may find!
