General Discussion : Asking others to host nest boxes on their land.

Hello, everyone.

I'm a woodworker who has taken an interest in building nest boxes. I have had the opportunity to build several boxes for a local wildlife rehabber.

I would like to start a nest box program in my area. I've already built several boxes. Of course, I don't personally own acres and acres of land, so I'm faced with using someone else's. There are several good fields in my area, but I've not yet approached anybody about hosting a nest box.

I was wondering if anyone here had experience or advice about the best way to go about this. I'm working on gathering as much information as I can to present to people while keeping it simple. Also, I'd like to have the ability to access and monitor the box as needed. Any help is appreciated!

Hello!

Awesome that you are interested in starting up a kestrel trail! I find that most land owners are generally willing to go along with kestrel nestboxes as long as I am honest and upfront with them. For instance, I explain what kestrel monitoring entails - and how it means that someone will be poking in on the property to check the nest box.

For some good info on kestrel conservation, check out the partnership documents here:

You can print out relevant info to give to them, if you like.

Thanks for the reply, Delora. I've talked to a professor at the local university about starting a nest box program. This would give his students an opportunity to receive credit for monitoring the boxes. I think this will open some doors regarding installation sites.
